Safe Sensory Play Ideas for Babies (That Won’t Destroy Your Living Room!) EP.1

Mess-free play? Yes, it’s possible.

Let’s face it—babies are tiny tornadoes of curiosity. They love to squish, splash, smear, and scatter. And while messy play has its place (hello, spaghetti painting), sometimes you just want to encourage their development without needing a hazmat suit to clean up afterwards.

Enter: mess-free play. Yes, it’s possible. And even better? With the help of a Munchkin and Bear Memory Foam Play Mat, you can create a soft, safe, and stylish zone that’s perfect for low-mess fun.

Whether you're a new mum trying to find a moment of peace or a pregnant mama-to-be planning your playroom, these ideas are designed to spark joy—not chaos.

Mess-free Colour pouches! - For our first installment we have taken inspiration from the much-loved Kayla @beyondtheclassroomwithkayla

Her super fun play idea, which also encourages important tummy time, is to create secure pouches of fun coloured water which are then taped to our play mat surface for bub to smack, poke and squish without fear of it bursting!

In a few EASY STEPS bub will be entertained for days!

All you need is laminating sheets, food colourings, tape, a hair straightener (sounds strange we know!) and of course a Munchkin & Bear Baby play mat .

  • Use your hair straightener to seal up three sides of your laminating pouches/slips (these are super strong, don't use ziplock bags for this activity)

  • Fill each bag with 1 cup water, a squirt of baby oil, and a few drops of a bright food colouring

  • Carefully create a fourth seal on the final edge of the laminated pouch with the hair straightener

  • Lay the coloured bags side by side along one side of your Munchkin & Bear Play Mat, secure to surface with tape (blue painters tape is good for this).

  • Watch with joy as your baby is safely entertained by the colour, texture & movement without the usual mess…. Great for safe sensory play!

Stay tuned for our next episode of Mess-Free Baby play ideas!
